The Yates County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the “misappropriation of funds” belonging to the Yates County Chamber of Commerce.
Sheriff Ron Spike said the probe began Nov. 14, when his office was notified of financial irregularities by the Chamber’s board of directors. Investigators are now looking at bank records.
“We don’t have all the bank records at this time. We will look at those records and hope that will provide us with some information we need,” Spike said. “That’s where we are at this point.”
Spike added that any amounts in excess of $1,000 would be considered a felony. He declined to say how much money could have been misappropriated, and said the investigation continues with unnamed persons of interest at this time.
In a statement sent to the press recently, Kathy Waye — president of the Chamber’s board of directors — said the following:
“Recently, it was brought to our attention there were some irregularities in financial matters. We immediately began an investigation. However, during that process the interim director departed the area unexpectedly,” the statement said. “The investigation is ongoing and we are working with the proper authorities. Rest assured that the Chamber staff and board will continue to do their jobs serving the Yates County community.”
Reached by email Wednesday afternoon, Waye said she could not comment further on the case at this time.
