Mayor Myrick picks Pete Tyler for Ithaca Police chief

After a months-long selection process, Ithaca City Mayor Svante Myrick recommended Acting Police Chief Pete Tyler to officially become the city’s new police chief, announced via news release Tuesday.

Early in the selection process, Ithaca Police Department’s previous Chief John Barber endorsed Tyler to fill his shoes once he retired in March.

With Myrick’s official recommendation, Tyler still needs to be approved by Common Council at their December meeting before he is officially appointed.

Tyler has been with the department since 1991, and has served as the acting chief since Barber’s retirement in March. Before then, he served as Ithaca’s administrative deputy chief and senior deputy chief, and has been on Ithaca’s SWAT and Recruitment teams.
