Fire destroyed the studio of a well-known sculptor Wednesday morning.
Yates County Sheriff Ron Spike deemed the Baker Road workspace of Dexter Benedict a total loss.
Deputies said Benedict’s wife, Faith, woke up around 5 a.m. when she heard their dog barking. She looked outside and saw Fireworks Foundry, as the barn/studio is called, engulfed in flames.
Firefighters were unable to save the structure, but did prevent several nearby outbuildings from burning.
Benedict, who has lived on Baker Road since 1974, was a professor at Keuka College from 1978-92 and 2002-10. He was named professor emeritus at Keuka after he retired.
His sculptures are displayed at numerous sites across the state and country.
