A local teenager’s decade-long Kung Fu journey leads to national test

Satchel Coen’s journey into martial arts began when he was 7, and his decision to try Kung Fu landed him at Finger Lakes Martial Arts Center.

Sifu Jerry Martin, who owns and operates the downtown business, admitted he was hesitant to take on a young child with Down syndrome. Ultimately, he did, asking the same of Satchel as he does all of his students: Pay attention, follow directions and don’t cause disturbances.

Satchel has done all of those things — and more.

“I wish I had 10 more students like him,” Martin said.

On Sept. 23, Satchel, now 17, achieved a goal he had progressed toward for the past decade. He tested in Kung Fu at the national level.
