The group representing Wayne County sheriff’s deputies said it will be filing an unfair labor practice charge over its efforts to gain a new contract.
The dispute is centered on who is representing deputies in negotiations.
In a press release, the Wayne County Police Officers Association stated that in a “highly unusual maneuver to avoid negotiations, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Board of Supervisors canceled negotiations” with the group. The association, represents sheriff’s deputies, sergeants and investigators, said it has been working without an agreement for nearly two years.
Association President Craig Pagnotti said deputies entered into a representational agreement with Teamsters Local 118 in Rochester. A secret ballot vote was conducted by association members, resulting in “unanimous support of the representational agreement and affiliation,” Pagnotti said, adding that the county is questioning that affiliation.
