Tom Munzert has been a Wayne County sheriff’s deputy for a little over a year, but he’s already got an impressive medal.
At Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Sheriff Barry Virts presented Munzert with the Meritorious Conduct Medal for his efforts to save a woman whose vehicle had crashed and overturned in a pond in Arcadia in July.
Virts said it is only the second one presented in the last eight years.
In a proclamation, Virts said Munzert was on patrol on Saturday, July 15, when he was dispatched by 911 operators to 6405 Bloom Road, where a car driven by Sandra Casselman had gone into a pond and overturned.
Virts said Munzert jumped into the pond without safety equipment and pulled Casselman from the car, which Virts said was filling with both water and smoke.
