Don’t throw pumpkins in trash in Ontario County

After Halloween, many people are faced with the dilemma of what to do with those pumpkins and jack o’lanterns.

Ontario County officials are urging people not to throw the squishy orange pumpkins in their trash for delivery to a landfill.

Instead, they are asking people to take them to one of three drop-off sites so they can be collected and taken to a large-scale composting business in Seneca Castle.

The county has partnered with Organix Green Industries in Seneca Castle to transport pumpkins brought to the three collection sites to the composting facility for vermicomposting, which is the process of composting organic material using different species of worms.
