For those living in the Geneva Foundry contamination zone, growing your own vegetables is not an advisable activity.
However, thanks to a group of residents — with some help from the city — those living in the zone and beyond have a place to grow veggies come spring next year.
On Sunday, Oct. 1, citizens, including those from the Geneva Foundry Action Committee, teamed with Geneva Peeps and the Geneva Neighborhood Resource Center to build 16 raised-garden beds that will provide safe soils for gardening next year.
The city provided the soil and seeds, while Jeff Henderson of Geneva Peeps offered space at the egg cooperative on State Street.
Hannah Dickinson, a member of the Foundry Action Committee, noted at the City Council meeting last week the “incredible work” done by volunteers working in tandem with the city.
Tamarie Cataldo of the Foundry Action Committee and Sarah Meyer of the Finger Lakes Institute acted as organizers. Jessica Avila, the city’s foundry liaison, and Ward 1 Councilor Angelina Marino also took part.
