Yates holds DWI victim impact panel

The Yates County STOP-DWI program sponsored its fall drunk/impaired driving victim impact panel on Sept. 13 at the county office building.

Sheriff Ron Spike, who chairs the panel task force, said the county does two panels a year. Last week’s session was the 19th since the program started.

“Our mission is to have driving under the influence by alcohol or drugs offenders understand the human factor of victimization that impaired driving can cause others affected by a related crash and how lives, families and friends are forever altered by a bad choice to drink or take illegal drugs and then drive a motor vehicle,” Spike said.

All courts in the county, in sentencing impaired drivers, make attending the victim impact panel a condition of the sentence. That is required by state vehicle and traffic law.
