Sheriff: Newark woman received $8K, charged with welfare fraud

The Wayne County Office of the Sheriff’s Welfare Fraud Unit, in conjunction with the Wayne County Department of Social Services, reports the arrest of Christee M. Lopez, 25, of Newark.

An investigation was initiated when it was discovered that Lopez had possibly received $8,000 in February from her ex-husband.

Lopez then failed to report any of this income to the Department of Social Services when she re-certified for food stamps in June.

The investigation confirmed that Lopez had received multiple cash payments amounting to $8,000, and she was subsequently charged.

As a result Lopez received $5,900.00 worth of benefits she should have never received. She was arrested for first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, third-degree welfare fraud, and third-degree grand larceny.

The charges will be answered at a later date.
