The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a 40-year-old Williamson man after an investigation into the misuse of food stamps.
Joseph R. Bertou, 40, of Williamson was arrested for petit larceny and misuse of food stamps.
Deputies say an investigation was initiated by the Department of Social Services after the report was filed that Bertou was possibly using another person’s EBT card to purchase food. It was first believed taht the EBT card belonged to an elderly female, who Bertou claimed was his mother that he previously lived with in Newark.
However, it was later determined that the elderly woman was not related to him in any way. Deputies then discovered that Bertou had recently used the EBT card to purchase food for himself, on multiple occasions in the Newark area. It was also determined that these transactions were all taking place while the elderly female was currently placed in an Adult Care Facility in Seneca County.
The Department of Social Services then quickly changed the EBT card number before more transactions could be made.
He’ll answer the charges at a later date in Lyons Town Court.
