Waterloo eyes solar farm moratorium

After imposing a six-month moratorium on mining permits Monday, the Town Board is now looking to approve a one-year moratorium on large commercial solar farms in the town.

The board voted 5-0 to direct Town Attorney Dennis Benjamin to draft a proposed local law imposing the solar farm moratorium.

Benjamin was asked to come up with a local law for introduction at the September board meeting. If approved then, it would be subject to a public hearing, most likely in November.

“We don’t have any large commercial solar developments in the town now, but we could and this moratorium will allow us to get more information on their impacts and let us consider incorporating solar farm regulations in our zoning code,” said Supervisor Gary Westfall.
