Geneva native ‘lucky so far’ in Houston

Geneva native Jeff Springmeier and his wife are hunkered down and riding out Hurricane Harvey in their Houston apartment building.

“There is no major flooding in the area we are. It’s safe and we feel we’ve been lucky so far,” he said by cell phone Tuesday afternoon.

That’s good news to his mother, Karen Springmeier of Geneva.

“I was very worried at first. I was glued to the TV and constantly on the phone or texting Jeff, back and forth,” she said. “I’m so relieved they can stay and did not have to evacuate, but I’m devastated by the destruction. I was thinking of going down to visit them, but I’m putting that off until later.”

Jeff added, however, that his situation could change. If the Buffalo Bayou overflows its banks, “it would mean a lot of water in our area. We’re praying that doesn’t happen.”
