Cayuga County to ramp up water testing as algal-bloom season approaches

The Cayuga County Health Department will begin testing Owasco Lake's waters for signs of blue-green algae two times a week beginning next week as bloom season draws near, County Health Department Director of Environmental Health Eileen O'Connor said during Thursday's Auburn City Council meeting.

Health department officials will take samples on Mondays and Thursdays, then send them to the water-testing lab in Albany. O'Connor said the department will receive the results the next day. The sample results are posted on the health department's website, cayugacounty.us/health.

In addition to sending the water samples for testing, the water treatment plant operators in both the city of Auburn and the town of Owasco are keeping an eye out for any visual signs of blooms and filtering raw water sample through a white filter to test for any discoloration.
