Schumer urges FEMA to approve disaster aid for Lake Ontario flooding

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is calling on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to approve New York's request for a major disaster declaration — a move that would allow federal aid for Cayuga County and other communities affected by flooding along Lake Ontario.

Schumer, D-N.Y., met with FEMA Administrator Brock Long Thursday and urged the agency to sign off on the state's request.

Lake Ontario communities have been impacted by flooding for months. The high water levels have affected businesses and residential properties. Docks are under water and shoreline erosion has been observed along the lake.

"Flood waters and powerful wind-driven waves have hit these communities hard and they need additional resources to recover," Schumer said. "That is why I made a strong case to FEMA Administrator Long to approve the state's requests for a disaster declaration and federal assistance."
