The Cayuga County Legislature will gather for a special meeting Wednesday night to discuss a proposed local law that would allow those affected from the Lake Ontario flooding to obtain some potential tax assessment relief.
Lawmakers were critical of the law at their July meeting. Part of the state’s newly passed “Lake Ontario and Connected Waterways Assessment Relief Act,” local governments must opt in to the local law, which would allow damaged properties to be reassessed. There could be a refund to property owners, but Cayuga County Attorney Fred Westphal had told legislators that it did not appear local municipalities would receive any reimbursement from the state.
