Swimming areas at the Wells College Dock in Aurora on Cayuga Lake and the Owasco Yacht Club on Owasco Lake are closed until further notice “due to the presence of harmful algal blooms,” the Cayuga County Health Department said Monday.
The health department monitors water quality at public beaches throughout the county and closes swimming areas when hazards are identified. The public will be notified when it is safe to swim in these areas again, Public Health Director Kathleen Cuddy said in a press release.
There have been numerous reports of harmful algal blooms on both Cayuga and Owasco lakes, according to the health department’s release.
Health officials ask that people report any blooms to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation by emailing [email protected].
