Union Springs elementary school set to close for renovations

Union Springs students won’t be flooding Andrew J. Smith Elementary School when the new school year arrives, but the building will have plenty of activity.

Renovations — such as a new wing, an updated library and updated cafeteria space — are set to be done on the building over the next year to make room for more students. The district’s Cayuga Elementary School is set to be closed permanently after the work at A.J. Smith is finished.

A.J. Smith will then have pre-K through fifth-grade students under its roof permanently. Voters approved the $8.6 million renovation project in March 2016.
