Waterloo Town Board OK’s mining permit moratorium

The Town Board introduced a local law Monday calling for a six-month moratorium on the issuance of permits for mining and excavation.

The board approved a separate moratorium in February, but that has expired. The new local law will be subject to a public hearing at 7 p.m. Aug. 28.

“This only affects any future mining operations, not existing ones,” Supervisor Gary Westfall said. “We need time to incorporate the mining moratorium from our comprehensive plan into the town zoning code.”

The new law states the board “is concerned about expansion of the mining activities in the town of Waterloo and the potentially negative impacts such additional mining activities may have upon public health, safety and welfare.” It also states the town is undertaking an investigation and analysis of these concerns, and in order to facilitate that analysis, the mining moratorium is being proposed.
