An invasive, wood boring beetle that attacks maples, birches, willows and many other hardwood trees, is a looming threat to upstate New York, and officials are looking for the public’s help in spotting them.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Tuesday that it will conduct its sixth Asian longhorned beetle Swimming Pool Survey. Between now and August 30, pool owners are encouraged to check their filters and keep an eye out for the invasive insect. The beetle is about 1.5 inches long, black with white spots and long antennae that are black and white.
DEC staff and partners will also be hanging tags on host trees to educate the public on the Asian longhorned beetle and demonstrate the potential impacts in neighborhoods and parks, according to a release.
