Ontario County hammered by flooding rains on Sunday (full coverage)

Ontario County was hammered by heavy rain, winds, and hail on Sunday afternoon as a slow-moving thunderstorm moved through the region.

The storm, which was originally tornado-warned, was downgraded to severe thunderstorm classification, but still was producing winds in excess of 60 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

A Flash Flood Warning was also issued for Ontario and Yates counties, with this storm, as it moved slowly south.

The National Weather Service has downgraded the Tornado Warning for Ontario County to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning. While the new warning lasts until 4:345 pm, damaging winds and hail aren’t the only threat. The storm is moving slowly at just 10 mph, which means that heavy rains and flooding are also possible.

Parts of Ontario County are under the gun this afternoon as severe thunderstorms are moving through.

The National Weather Service noted that the cell moving through the Canandaigua area, toward Canandaigua Lake — had well-defined rotation, which resulted in a Tornado Warning being issued. The initial warning is active until 3:30 pm.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a* Tornado Warning for…North central Ontario County in western New York…* Until 330 PM EDT.* At 259 PM EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Canandaigua, moving east at 10 mph.HAZARD…Tornado.SOURCE…Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACTS: Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely.*

Locations impacted include…Canandaigua and Shortsville.

TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

Seek shelter immediately if you live in the warned area.
