Newark tops Geneva on Monday night at McDonough

On Monday evening in Geneva, the visiting Pilots (10-24) captured a 5-4 victory over the hosting Red Wings (18-15).

The Pilots took a 3-0 lead over the Red Wings in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Mark McKenna (Canisius) and Hunter Wells (Tyler J.C.) both scored on wild pitches for the first two runs of the game. To end the scoring frame, Colton Carney (Seton Hill) doubled home Peter Battaglia (Niagara) to cap the three run inning.

Geneva responded with one in the bottom half of the inning. Mikey Arman (Kenyon) singled home TJ Byrd (Rend Lake) for Geneva’s first scoring of the evening. Byrd finished with two runs scored on the night. The Red Wings struck again in the bottom of the third, this time on a Joseph Tassin (Bossier Parish CC) infield RBI single.

In the top of the fifth, Battaglia hit a two run home run to start the inning, pushing Newark’s lead back up to three runs. A bases loaded walk would slim the lead to two in the bottom half of the sixth on a bases loaded walk for Geneva; however, single runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings would stretch the lead to four for Newark.

The Red Wings pushed across one in the bottom of the ninth on a Dominic Toso (Bucknell) RBI single, but that would be the extent of their scoring in the final frame.

Geneva returns to action on Tuesday at home against the Jamestown Jammers (26-6).
