31-year-old Ithaca man drowns at popular Adirondack swimming hole

A 31-year-old upstate New York man has died at a popular Adirondack Mountains swimming hole.

According to Essex County coroner Frank Whitelaw, the body of Matthew Miller, of Ithaca, was recovered shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities say the victim was with friends at the Wilmington Flume section of the Ausable River when he disappeared Monday.

Recent heavy rains created hazardous conditions on the river and hampered the search. Whitelaw tells the Adirondack Daily Enterprise that rescue crews discovered the victim’s body in about 8 feet of water using a remote camera operated from an inflatable boat. He says Miller likely jumped from a popular perch about 15 feet above the fast-rushing river.
