Wayne County to try for hotel/motel tax

Wayne County is attempting once again to join a long list of counties — many in the region — that charge hotel/motel taxes.

Last week, the Board of Supervisors passed a resolution by a 14-1 vote to ask the state Legislature to authorize the county to levy a 5 percent occupancy tax related to hotels, motels or seasonal cottages.

A bill related to the request and sponsored by Assemblyman Bob Oaks, R-130 of Macedon, was in the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, but did not make it to the floor in the current session.

No bill is in the Senate, but Sandra Sloane, clerk of the Board of Supervisors, said she was told by Oaks’ office that a companion bill is not necessary at this time.
