Finger Lakes wineries join national organization for weekend symposium

Women for WineSense is a national organization dedicated to wine education, leadership and networking.

Its roots date back nearly three decades — and how it was born is as interesting as the fermentation process itself.

Michaela Rodeno and Julie Johnson founded Women for WineSense in 1990. They were prompted by their children coming home from school and asking “Why are you making drugs?”

Outraged at what they perceived as one-sided information their children were receiving in the classroom, they formed Women for WineSense. Their goal: to discuss moderate wine consumption, its benefits in a healthy lifestyle, and the need for more balanced information on wine labels and bottles. The first chapter was in Napa/Sonoma, and now there are chapters all across the United States.

The organization is holding its national Grand Event from July 27-29 in the Finger Lakes Wine Region with the Finger Lakes Chapter as the official host.
