On the day that Newark native Russell Gilbert found out that former Buffalo Bill Bruce Smith was in his restaurant, Gilbert hid in the kitchen.
“My nerves were going through my chest,” he said. “I was beyond giddy.”
Once he collected himself, Gilbert wound up talking to the NFL Hall of Famer for two hours while Smith enjoyed the wings at The Dirty Buffalo, Gilbert’s restaurant in Norfolk, Virginia. Gilbert now counts Smith among his repeat customers.
