More than 10,500 customers were without power at the peak of an electricity outage in the city of Auburn and surrounding towns and villages Monday afternoon.
Cayuga County 911 dispatchers said a transformer had blown, causing the outage. Initial radio reports said the transformer blew in the area of State and York streets in Auburn.
As of 6 p.m. Monday, power had been restored most customers affected by the incident, according to New York State Electric and Gas’ website. Municipalities affected included Auburn, Aurelius, Brutus, Mentz, Montezuma, Owasco, Port Byron, Sennett, Throop and Weedsport.
In a Facebook post, the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office said there was a large explosion at the power transfer station on State Street. There were no injuries related to the blast.
