Crews battle major structure fire in Port Byron on Sunday

Around 5 pm on Sunday crews in Cayuga County were called to a structure fire at 1284 Howland Island Rd., which they would spend more than an hour attempting to knock down the heavy flames.

According to Cayuga-Seneca Fire Wire, Port Byron, Weedsport, Throop, Montezuma, Conquest, Victor, Jordan, and Aurelius Fire Departments, as well as Auburn RIT were called to the scene for a ‘working structure fire’ with flames showing.

The Cayuga County Rehab Truck and State Fire Investigators were also called to the scene.

Port Byron Fire Department was first on scene, confirming that flames were showing — and a working structure fire was active at the scene.

According to those with knowledge of the scene, the departments on scene were able to get crews inside to fight the fire.

After more than an hour on scene, firefighters had knocked down ‘most of the fire’ but overhaul of the property was just beginning.

Scanner traffic also indicates that people were able to get out of the structure safely.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
