Trinity project moves ahead: City ZBA OKs use variance request for church redevelopment

After four months of debate and two public hearings, the city Zoning Board of Appeals on Tuesday night unanimously approved a use variance request by Trinity Episcopal Church that would ultimately allow the church to redevelop its historic property into an inn, events center and restaurant.

The church, which has been struggling in recent years with low membership and a shrinking bank account, would also continue to worship at the South Main Street site in a tony neighborhood where a large number of residents have opposed the project.

The ZBA approved the measure, crafted by City Attorney Emil Bove after hearing presentations from attorneys representing the church and developer, as well as one hired by project opponents.
