New York’s deer biologists estimated that 54,099 of the bucks killed last season were 2.5 years and older and that only 49 percent of bucks taken statewide were yearlings.
If you file that under “so what?” figures, you are missing a point. The state’s deer hunters have become far more selective when it comes to shooting small-racked bucks in recent years. Not long ago, we were killing 80 percent of the state’s yearlings (1.5 year-olds, which is when they sport their first racks) each season.
