Fleming supervisor: Harriet Tubman lived in town, not Auburn

Fleming Supervisor Gary Searing is reminding local residents that famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman was a resident of his town, not the city of Auburn.

In a letter dated Jan. 25 that was provided to The Citizen Tuesday, Searing noted that there’s “documented proof” Tubman lived in Fleming. He said that information has been shared with the National Park Service.

The letter was sent to federal officials and undisclosed media outlets.

“I believe when it comes to historical facts, we should try our best to acknowledge them and not bend them for geographic convenience,” Searing wrote.

This isn’t the first time Searing has made his case for acknowledging that Fleming, not Auburn, is where Tubman’s residence is located.
