Corning’s ‘Glass Barge’ will take part in Canal Fest in Seneca Falls

The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) will bring its GlassBarge to this year’s Canal Fest. This all-new, world-class performance venue brings floating Hot Glass Demos to the Museum’s New York State neighbors along the Erie Canal and its connected waterways. The 2nd Annual Seneca Falls Canal Fest will be held July 7th through the 9th on both sides of the Seneca Falls Canal Harbor.

In Seneca Falls, The CMoG will pay tribute to the role of women in New York State who shaped our nation. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of women receiving the right to vote in New York State, GlassBarge will deploy an all-female glassblowing team to the Seneca Falls Canal Fest. Along with the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and the National Women’s Hall of Fame, The CMoG will take the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the artistry and skill of women glassmakers, who make up more than 50 percent of the glassmakers at the Museum.

The CMoG’s Hot Glass Demo Team will provide free public hot glass programming, including daily glassmaking demonstrations with invited guest artists throughout the Canal Fest. The 2017 GlassBarge deployments are a prelude to an ambitious statewide deployment in 2018, planned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of glassmaking coming to Corning from Brooklyn via the New York Harbor, the Hudson River, and the Erie Canal.

Canal Fest organizers have restructured and improved the venue’s footprint for this year’s Fest to include the relocation of all Amusement Rides & Midway to the Southside of the Canal Harbor and expanded the adult beverage consumption area to encompass the entire Northside of the Canal Harbor. Dennis Scannell, Canal Fest PR & Marketing, “These improvements expand our handicap parking area, opens up our boat launch, provides parking for watercraft trailers, and offers more options for wineries, cideries, and breweries to participate. It also places the entire celebration within the Canal Harbor and Downtown corridor which delivers a better experience for all of our visitors. We are so excited that the Corning Museum of Glass has chosen our event to display their GlassBarge. The GlassBarge offers more entertainment for the young and old alike and further recognizes Seneca Falls as the Birthplace of Women’s Rights”.

The 2nd Annual Canal Fest traces its roots back to the Aqua Festival held in the ‘60s and early ‘70s and the Seneca Falls Business Association (SFBA) serves as the organizer of this unique event. The organizing committee is actively inviting sponsors, volunteers, vendors, and participants to join in to make this Canal Fest a successful experience. Interested parties may contact SFBA directly at [email protected].
