Proposed city of Auburn budget takes shape, department heads make requests

Budget was on the brain of Auburn city councilors and city department heads Thursday evening.

Besides reviewing the city’s overall budget during the council’s weekly meeting, members heard the individual budgets of several departments including the city manager, the mayor, planning and economic development, code enforcement, engineering, municipal utilities and the Auburn Police Department.

Comptroller Laura Wills kicked off the number crunching, explaining that in this first draft budget the city will use approximately $34 million in its general fund, which will include a 1.26 percent increase in the tax levy. That does not include any use of the city’s approximately $5.8 million in the fund balance.
