The Tompkins County Legislature decided in a 10-4 vote to hold a public hearing on increasing the legal age for tobacco product sales.
The hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. April 18th at the Tompkins County Legislative Chambers.
The legislation would make it illegal to sell cigarettes and other tobacco items and paraphernalia to anyone under the age of 21. However, it would not penalize the individuals making these purchases, only the vendors.
State law currently allows persons 18 and over to buy tobacco products, but local governments within the state are permitted to increase the minimum legal sale age in their jurisdiction.
