Cayuga County jobless rate increases for first time since 2012

Cayuga County’s unemployment rate in February experienced its first year-over-year increase in more than 50 months.

The state Department of Labor on Tuesday reported job market data that put the county jobless rate at 6.2 percent last month, up from 6.0 percent in February 2016. The monthly rate had not increased compared with the same month in the prior year since August 2012.

The local rate was also substantially higher than both the national rate (4.9 percent) and state rate (5.1 percent). The figures were not adjusted for season fluctuations.

The labor department said there were 2,200 unemployed county residents in February, unchanged from the previous year. Employed residents decreased by 1,300 to 33,400.
