Katko: Lake Ontario closer to national marine sanctuary status

Lake Ontario is a step closer to being officially designated as a national marine sanctuary.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reviewed the nomination of southeastern Lake Ontario and will include it in a collection of areas under consideration for national marine sanctuary status.

Four counties — Cayuga, Jefferson, Oswego and Wayne — partnered to work on the proposal for the national marine sanctuary designation in 2015. The application was supported by U.S. Rep. John Katko, whose district includes all or parts of Cayuga, Oswego and Wayne counties.
