NY Legislature opposes cuts to visitation at Auburn, other maximum security prisons

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to reduce the visitation schedule at New York’s 17 maximum security correctional facilities has been rejected by the state Legislature.

The one-house budget resolutions released by the Assembly Democrats and state Senate Republicans includes provisions to restore the proposed cut, which the Cuomo administration said would save the state $2.6 million.

The plan would reduce visitation at Auburn Correctional Facility and other maximum security prisons from 7 days a week to three. The policy would be similar to medium security facilities, which allow visitors on weekends and holidays.

Assemblyman Gary Finch confirmed in a phone interview Wednesday that the state Assembly’s one-house budget includes the restoration of the visitation policy.
