The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Sunday night around 8:30 pm they were called to a structure fire at 5508 State Rt. 89 in Varick.

The owner’s of the home, Harold and Sue Jennings arrived home around that time discovering that the house was on fire. No one was present or inside at the time of the fire, and the cause is currently under investigation.

However, it took crews hours to fight the blaze, as they had to contend with a variety of factors. A full tanker task force was called in from Seneca County, which resulted in one of the largest mutual aid calls in some time.

Ovid Fire Department helped to extinguish the fire, and was assisted by Romulus, Lodi, Canoga, Waterloo, Seneca Falls, Interlaken, Border City, Magee, and Varick Fire Departments.

The estimated value of the home was around $100,000 and it was insured, according to the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office.
