Mynderse boys, girls see championship seasons end at Far West Regionals

The Mynderse Academy boys and girls varsity basketball teams both captured Section V Class B Champions a week ago but saw their seasons come to an end just one game short of the NYSPHSAA Final Four on Saturday in Batavia and Buffalo respectively.

The Mynderse Blue Devils boys were up first against Section VI Class B champs, Health Sciences Charter School at 3:30 pm. The contest was played at Genesee Community College in Batavia after power outages due to this week’s windstorm forced the game to be relocated from Rush-Henrietta.

In a game that Mynderse led by 9 points in the second half, the Health Sciences Falcons would charge back late in the game to capture a 50-47 victory.

Junior Quinten Battle would lead Mynderse with 13 points in the loss. In their final game wearing a Mynderse uniform, Jake Jones scored 10, Brett Anderson scored 5, and Jake Mein had 9 points, 14 rebounds and 7 blocked shots.

Mynderse ends their season at 22-2 with a Finger Lakes East league title and the school’s 9th Sectional Championship.

Later Saturday evening, at 7 pm, it would be the Mynderse Lady Blue Devils turn to take a shot at advancing to the state final four when they took on the Section VI Class B champion Fredonia Hillbillies at Buffalo State college in Buffalo..

Fredonia opened up the game on fire from the field scoring 17 first quarter points and hitting 5 first half threes to open up a 28-18 lead at the break. Mynderse would make several runs in the second half but would never get closer than six before eventually falling to the Hillbillies 55-46.

Junior center Heidi Miller was most effective for the Lady Blue Devils scoring a game-high 17 points including 9 second half free throws. Fellow junior Hannah Brown-Trice finished with 13. In their final high school game, Hayley Case scored 6 points on a pair of three-pointers, Sarah Shaffer scored 4, and Megan Tilton was held scoreless.

The Lady Blue Devils end their season with a record of 20-4, a Finger Lakes East league title and the Section V Class B Sectional Championship.
