Irondequoit too much for Wayne in Class A State Play-In

The Section V Class A2 Champion Wayne Eagles kept it interesting against the #1 NYS Ranked, Class A1 Champion Irondequoit Eagles in the NYS Class A Qualifier on Thursday night at Bloomfield. Wayne coach Bill Thompson’s young Eagles were executing on the game plan perfectly, keeping the pace slow, and the score down. They entered the halftime break tied at 17 each.

In the third quarter, however, Irondequoit proved to be too much as they extended their lead before capturing a 56-36 victory that would propel them into the state tournament where they will face North Tonawanda out of Section VI in the Far West Regional on Saturday at 6:00 pm at Rush-Henrietta High School.

Irondequoit’s Gerald Drumgoole led all scorers with 23 while teammates Alex Goldsberry had 15 and Zach Stenglein scored 12.

For the Eagles, junior Braeden Zenelovic and sophomore Nick Carmichael each scored 12.

The loss marks the end of the most successful season in the history of Wayne basketball as this group captured the schools first Sectional title. The Eagles return all five starters next season.

In other state qualifier action on Thursday night in Mount Morris, Northstar Christian defeated Cuba-Rushford in Class C and C.G. Finney defeated Elba in Class D.
