A group of upstate lawmakers is taking a new approach to repealing the SAFE Act, a gun control measure that was adopted in 2013. Bills sponsored by state Sen. Rob Ortt and Assemblyman Marc Butler would repeal key provisions of the SAFE Act for areas outside of the five New York City boroughs.
The legislation is supported by members of Cayuga County’s state legislative delegation, including state Sens. Pam Helming and Jim Seward and Assemblyman Bob Oaks. The legislators want to repeal the SAFE Act’s five-year pistol permit recertification requirement and repeal the mandated ammunition database. The measure also calls for the repeal of the License and Record Database, a SAFE Act requirement that hasn’t been implemented.
