TRINITY CLOSURE A POSSIBILITY: City zoning board rejects request for use variance

Trinity Episcopal Church officials said a plan to redevelop the historic building into an inn, events center and restaurant was their only hope for keeping its doors open. That hope was dashed Tuesday night.

The city Zoning Board of Appeals rejected Trinity’s application for a use variance following a nearly three-hour public hearing and a series of votes that were confusing to everyone in attendance, including ZBA members. What happens next seems inevitable, according to one Trinity congregation member who spoke at the hearing.

“The congregation will vacate the premises,” former mayor and Trinity member Joanne Wisor said. “We cannot afford to stay there.”
