Coast Guard and Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office investigating fake distress calls

The first call went out over a marine radio frequency on April 23rd 2015. A man’s voice said “Mayday.”

By triangulating radio tower reception sites, the Coast Guard narrowed down a location. The call did not come from a lake but from the rural town of Fleming in Cayuga County. Sheriff’s deputies searched around Fleming and Owasco lake but determined the call was a hoax.

“Responding to this, they are putting their lives on the line, going out in the water when there is no one in need of help – that’s a big concern of mine,” said Lt. Brian Schenck from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office.
