Virts named to STOP-DWI board

Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts has been named western region chairperson for the New York State STOP-DWI Association board of directors.

Virts began his 40-year career with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office as a corrections officer and rose through the ranks, serving as a deputy, sergeant, lieutenant and chief deputy. He was first elected sheriff in 2010 and appointed the county’s STOP-DWI coordinator in 2013.

During his time in the sheriff’s office, Virts has served as a crisis negotiator, crash management analyst, incident commander and training supervisor. He has also served on many local committees including the 911 Center advisory board, Action for Racial Equality, Fire Police Association liaison and the Domestic Violence and Victims’ Services Committee.
