Local school officials skeptical of DeVos

Newly confirmed Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ views on school choice and her alleged lack of familiarity with public education concern local school administrators.

Meanwhile, a local school-choice leader said DeVos’ history as an advocate for private education — and school vouchers to support that effort — is just what the nation needs to provide competition for what he described as the “monopolistic” institution of public education.

The Senate last week narrowly approved the confirmation of DeVos as the new secretary of education following a tiebreaking vote cast by Vice President Mike Pence.

DeVos, a billionaire Republican donor, has faced fierce criticism from labor unions for her promotion of school choice. Democrats and teachers’ organizations have accused her of seeking to dismantle public education and divert taxpayer money to charter schools and private school vouchers.
