Weedsport man sent to prison for assaulting paramedics in Cayuga County

A Weedsport man was sent to prison Thursday for assaulting two paramedics in Cayuga County. In October, William Smith, of 133 Oakleaf Dr., pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted assault, a class E felony. At the time, the 42-year-old admitted he became violent with two paramedics in the town of Brutus on Dec. 6, 2015.

According to Cayuga County District Attorney Jon Budelmann, Smith was highly intoxicated when he assaulted the emergency medical technicians. He was initially charged with felony second-degree assault, obstructing emergency medical personnel and second-degree harassment; however, the district attorney allowed Smith to plead to a lesser count of attempted assault in full satisfaction of the indictment.
