Cortland County man jailed for illegal stormwater runoff that damaged cemetery

A Cortland County man has been sent to jail for failing to address illegal stormwater runoff from his property that has damaged a nearby cemetery and led to flooding on a local road. James Stevens, 70, of Cortlandville, was remanded to Cortland County Jail Tuesday by Judge Phillip Rumsey.

The case involving Stevens dates back to 2012, when the state Department of Environmental Conservation found he redirected stormwater runoff from his Ridgeway Avenue property through a drainage swale that was several hundred feet long.
