Sen. Rich Funke wants the state to pay $3 million to ensure Thoroughbred racing continues at a track in Farmington as competition for gambling dollars grow. The Perinton Republican was set to introduce a bill Tuesday evening calling on the state to appropriate funds to protect purses at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack, which employs roughly 1,200.
The legislation also calls for $375,000 to be spent on the state’s Thoroughbred Breeding and Development fund to ensure that purses are maintained at 2013 levels. The purse at Finger Lakes was roughly $18 million last year. Funke said in legislative papers that the allocation amounts to the projected hit at the track by the opening of del Lago Resort & Casino, nearly 30 miles east of Finger Lakes track.
