Solar housing project pitched for land near Geneva lakefront tunnel

A Geneva startup is seeking Downtown Revitalization Initiative money to help fund a solar-powered housing project near the lake tunnel downtown. SmallGrid, in tandem with a sister company called Qwiksolar, is proposing to build Solar Village, a project featuring 28 micro apartments and 24 vacation rentals that will be powered by a solar unit that will be manufactured at the Geneva Enterprise Development Center on North Genesee Street.

The power source is something SmallGrid created called Life Cube, said company partner Ryan Wallace, founder and partner of Qwiksolar, based on Carter Road, where it operates a solar farm. Life Cube features parts from both Mitsubishi and electric car manufacturer Tesla, said Wallace, and under the proposal, a 15-by-15 foot version of the unit will supply all the electric and heat needed for Solar Village.
