It was very calm right next to Pennsylvania Avenue and a couple of blocks from the National Mall, but several blocks away, it was anything but calm.
Demonstrators in the Northwest portion of Washington D.C. clashed with police. Several windows of businesses were smashed out, fires had been set on the street and police were using tear gas to settle things. But police teams- some 3200 officers and 5000 National Guard members- were still on high alert, worried that more violent protests are still to come. There to take it all in: kids in orange hats standing in a sea of red, white and blue and signs of both support and opposition.
